Reggae originated in Kingston Jamaica during the late 1960s. It emerges as a distinct genre from the slower tempo of rocksteady and the upbeat rhythms of ska, which dominated Jamaican music in the early 60s. The 1968 single "do the reggay" by Toots and the Maytals is widely recognized as the first song to use the term "reggae" effectively naming the genre and introducing to a global audience.
